New Academy Aligns Cultural Identity with Academic Success
|
Cole Elementary, a TLBF sponsored school since 2006, has transformed into Pamoja Preparatory Academy @ Cole School.
Pamoja, meaning “together” in Swahili, is the first school in the St. Louis public school system to offer an African-centered curriculum. Along with the traditional subjects, students will learn about African history, values and customs and about the many contributions of African Americans to the subject areas they are studying. Teachers also will emphasize core values, such as accountability, leadership, respect and social responsibility.
The curriculum is modeled after similar programs growing in popularity across the country and is rooted in the belief that students who have a greater understanding and appreciation for their heritage are better equipped to understand and interact with other cultures. School administrators say it is not about exclusivity but about loving and knowing oneself and others. To date, 211 students are enrolled.
