The Little Bit Foundation’s (TLBF) story began shortly after receiving a phone call from an inner-city school teacher. The teacher asked if we could provide coats for students at her school. Many were so cold that their arms were blue when they arrived to their classrooms. TLBF was conducting our annual coat drive to benefit the St. Patrick Center. The next day we clothed 175 children with warm coats. At the end of the day we asked a simple question, “What else do you need?”
In December 2001, TLBF began assisting inner-city school children by providing basic needs. Recognizing that regular attendance and preparedness are important factors for educational success, TLBF set out to collect and distribute clothing, uniforms, backpacks, schools supplies, and hygiene kits. From the start, it has been very important to our foundation that all items we provide are of the highest quality and are delivered with care.
TLBF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization presently serving approximately 3,000 students in several inner-city schools. The foundation seeks to assist schools with 90 percent or above rate of students who receive subsidized meals, which means that they are at or near the poverty level. Principals, teachers, social workers, nurses and parent teacher liaisons are essential to our success, in identifying students’ needs. Preserving students’ self-esteem and dignity at all times is a critical factor in our interactions at the schools.
